GEMMA BROLLY: SF and Westminster Working In Hand To Force Abortion On The North

In response to the shocking news that Westminster seeks to make an unprecedented move to give the North of Ireland Secretary new powers to compel Stormont to implement abortion laws East Derry Aontú Representative

Gemma Brolly stated; “For 200 years Republicans have told Westminster that they have no right to impose their law on Ireland. Yet in a seismic u turn Mary Lou McDonald and "New Sinn Féin" have binned that policy”.

“This is an attack on the Self Determination of the people of the north and an attack on the Good Friday Agreement. This has not come from Unionists but shockingly it has been orchestrated by both SF and the SDLP. As a co-signer of the Good Friday Agreement we are calling on the southern Government and the Taoiseach Mícheal Martin to intervene in this power grab of a devolved issue by the Tories in London”.

“Last week we saw the party that once boasted of its Civil Rights credentials equivocate on whether or not to allow for abortion in the north on the basis of disability. It is shocking to so many of us that Michelle O’Neill spoke out against a bill that sought to remove Down Syndrome as a reason for abortion. The absence of compassion and humanity in Michelle O’Neill’s attack on this reform to protect Children with disability has struck so many in the Nationalist Community.

“It seems the “right to life, liberty and security of person” are not even up for democratic debate now as Sinn Féin quietly feel the need to yet again ‘slip’ British rule through the back door. “Sinn Féin do not believe that a non-fatal foetal abnormality is an appropriate criterion for an abortion,” said Ms Sheerin on 2nd June 2020, yet flip on this human right in the space of a year”.

“Aontú will tirelessly continue to remind this former Republican party, in fear that they have forgotten, their founding beliefs, that we are obligated as Republicans to cherish “all the children of the nation equally, oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien Government”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
