GEMMA BROLLY: European Parliament Shameful Abortion Resolution Is An Insult To Unborn Lives
In response to the shocking news that the European Parliament passed abortion as a human right and claims medical professionals should have no right to conscientiously object to performing abortions, East Derry Aontú Representative Gemma Brolly stated:
Rep Brolly: “On Thursday 24th June 2021 the European Parliament endorsed a report now defining abortion as a human right. Not satisfied with one such contradictory ruling the European Parliament now also claims that any doctors or hospitals that conscientiously object to performing abortions put ‘women’s lives in danger.”
“Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from the beginning to the end of life. These basic rights are based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence, however of late this appears to apply on an adhoc basis. These ‘rulings’ are in blatant violation of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (namely Article 2: The Right to Life; Article 10-: Freedom of thought, conscience and religion; Article 21: Discrimination; Article 24:The Rights of the Child and Article 26: Integrations of persons with Disabilities.)”
“Like many other sources at present, the “Matic Report” which brought about Thursday’s rulings, is heavily one-sided. It does not take into account fully the life situations of those concerned and of their corresponding human rights. It’s purpose is a contradiction of the already existing European Charter of Fundamental Rights and it violates the European Union principle of subsidiarity by disregarding the responsibility of member states themselves to define their health, policy and organisation and delivery of health services and medical care.”
“To generalise that by medical professionals not performing abortions they are putting women’s lives in danger is not only insulting to the countless innocent unborn lives which are unspoken of but it is masquerading what could very easily and quickly become another form of ‘family planning.’ There is also very little attention or print space given to the post-abortion health care, to the counselling and support needed by so many women, which is also a priority for Aontú and so many other Pro-Life groups, contrary to wider opinion.”
“The public must be under no illusion, while these actions of the European Parliament carry no legal implications, or obligations to comply, they are designed to pressurise the people of its member states and ripple further afield. There are no international human rights or treaties which provide for such a general ‘human right’ to abortion as abortion painted as a ‘general’ health issue could not be further from the truth. Aontú demand transparency at all levels, the complexities and sensitivities surrounding such matters as abortion should be democratically debated and progressed in just that manner, sensitively and in line with ALL human rights, including those of the unborn child and of those with disabilities. We will work tirelessly to make sure this happens.”
