GEMMA BROLLY: 700 abortions in the North in the last year. SF seek law to Increase this Number. - Brolly

In response to the Sinn Féin call for the ramp up of the number of abortions in the North of Ireland East Derry Aonú Representative Gemma Brolly stated;

“The starting point for us as Irish Republicans is the Easter Proclamation which states that we must ‘Cherish all the children of the Nation equally’. It is heart breaking for many Nationalists and Republicans in the north of Ireland that Sinn Féin now opposes this fundamental tenant of Proclamation of the Republic”.

“According to the “Irish Unity” section of the SF website, “The (Good Friday) Agreement asserts that it is for the people of the island of Ireland alone to shape our future and to exercise our right of self-determination on the “basis of consent, freely and concurrently given, North and South”.

“Yet Sinn Féin has binned this aspect of their objectives when they pushed Westminster to impose a radical abortion regime on the north of Ireland against the wishes of the people of the north”.

“Sinn Féin claim to be an “All-Ireland Party” yet they have a partionist policy on legislation North and South of the country. Abortion in the 26 counties can be “carried out up to 12 weeks of the child’s life. But in the north Sinn Fein are pushing abortion up to 24 weeks of life”.

“Sinn Féin talks about Disability Rights, yet they brought about a Bill that allows for abortion up until birth for a child with Down Syndrome. How can a party that talks civil rights, allow for people with disabilities to be screened out”.

“The Legislation in the Republic also requires a period of 3 days to elapse between a decision to have an abortion and the date on which it can take place. In the North there is no such protection for the child’s life. Sinn Féin are following the Officials/Stickies in their two-state approach, lobbying Westminster to legislate for the north of Ireland and down the cruel road of abortion on demand”.

“Nationalists and Republicans in the north have a history of standing up for Human Rights. Now Sinn Féin seek to bin the Human Right to life of the weakest amongst us. Mary Lou is deleting what leaders such as Martin McGuinness once stood for. There is absence of humanity or compassion in the position of “New Sinn Féin”.

“We in Aontú believe that all live under the same sky. We are all responsible for each other, including the smallest and weakest among us. Shockingly there were well over 700 abortions in the North in the last year, yet it's seems this is not enough for Sinn Féin. Sinn Féin are now pushing for the law to be changed again so the numbers of Irish lives ended will increase”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
