Fine Gael leader indicates the glacial easing of restrictions over 12 months while Deputy leader's Department has a Champagne Party.
Responding to the Tánaiste’s comments on national radio, Aontú Leader & Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has hit out against the duplicity of Fine Gael in government as they outline a glacial easing of restrictions for the average citizen while their Department hosted a champagne party.
An Teachta Tóibín: “From #Golfgate, to #LeoTheLeak, to #ZapponeGate, Leo’s Varadkar’s Fine Gael have sent a crystal clear message to the people: ‘we are not all in this together.’ In a Boris Johnson-esque manner, the Tánaiste went on national radio yesterday to warn people that it could take up to another year before draconian and damaging restrictions will be eased while his own Deputy Leader’s department held a champagne party in breach of Covid-19 regulations – which the Minister admits knowing about. The Tánaiste could not answer questions about the party or justify its occurrence. The Tánaiste sought to abdicate responsibility for the governance of the Dept of Foreign Affairs. The Tánaiste sought to outsource responsibility to civil servants. This is flagrant deflection. The Minister for Foreign affairs knew about the party, knew it would be in breach of Covid-19 regulations, and could have stopped the event going forward. Instead, the Minister for Foreign Affairs said nothing, defended the party, and even ‘popped his head in’ after the champagne was popped.”
“The lengths Fine Gael are going to, to both defend the champagne party but then also say the Minister disagreed with the event he attended are extraordinary. We are not all in this together. This is one rule for the Fine Gael and their political class and another rule for the little people.”
