“Establishment Parties Standing in the Way of Response to Energy Crisis” – Cllr Denise Muleln

Aontú deputy leader Cllr. Denise Mullen has criticised the Stormont deadlock for limiting the response to the energy crisis.

Speaking today, Cllr Mullen said “The establishment parties are standing in the way of a response to the energy crisis. Without an executive, Ministers cannot make spending decisions. As a result, Northerners cannot avail of the Energy Bill Support Scheme or a price freeze. While MLAs play political playground games, preventing serious solutions to the energy crisis, people’s energy bills are going up by 56%.”

Cllr Mullen continued “It’s a disgrace that MLAs are still drawing a wage, for a job they’re not doing, while their inaction is pushing so many families in our community up against the wall. The salary of MLAs must be reduced to the Minimum Wage until such a time as they are willing to do their job.”

“With the spiralling energy crisis, we desperately need an emergency response. We cannot allow the energy crisis to devolve to a situation where families cannot heat their homes, hospitals are running off generators and small businesses cannot afford to stay open.” Concluded Cllr Mullen

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
