Cllr Denise Mullen: Families of the Remaining Disappeared Deserve Answers

Joining calls from Archbishop Eamon Martin, Aontú Deputy Leader & Candidate for Fermanagh South Tyrone, Cllr Denise Mullen, has said the families of the reamaining Disappeared deserve answers just as much as victims of state violence do, and the chance to afford their loves ones a Christian Burial.

Cllr Denise Mullen: “The Disappeared whose bodies have never been found. Some missing as long as 50 years. It remains a dark cloud over our communities that their families are still denied answers, and the chance to afford their loved ones a Christian burial. As time goes on, that opportunity for truth, for burial grows less and less of a possibility. Victims and survivors of violence during the Troubles are still in pursuit of justice to this day. Amnesties and stonewalling cannot be allowed impede our path to reconciliation. I ask anyone with information to come forward and give answers to loved ones too long in waiting.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder a half a billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
