Cllr Denise Mullen: Beattie Return to Jail. Increased Sentence a Welcome Relief

On foot of yesterday’s court ruling against Garfield Beattie, Aontú Deputy Leader Cllr Denise Mullen has welcomed the verdict which returns Beattie to jail and increases his sentence for having appealed against a prison sentence.

Cllr Mullen: “It is a huge relief to me and my family to see the Courts ensure that the man who murdered my father is off the streets. This man murdered my father and tried to murder my mother. He has already caused over 4 decades of pain and suffering in my family. He reignited that anxiety and fear again with his threatening letter to me from the ‘East Tyrone UVF.’ In the wake of the custodial sentence handed down at trial, it was extremely worrying for me and my family that Beattie was then allowed on bail. This is a man with a proven record of violence and with the blood of innocents on his hands. I have lived in real fear over the last while. I have been checking my rear view mirrors on my car when I am out driving to make sure that no one is following me. We will not allow this man to ever threaten our family again.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
