Brolly slams British Government on Prioritising Abortion Lessons
Aontú Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly slams British Parliament for wrongly prioritising abortion lessons above addressing the current education crisis.
Following the vote in the House of Commons last week to teach all 11-16 year olds in Northern Ireland about abortion, Deputy Leader Gemma Brolly stated “Yet again, here we have British Parliament imposing regulations on the North of Ireland with absolutely no consultation with those whom it will affect. Furthermore, the implementation of similar regulations in England followed a period of consultation, it appears citizens of the North of Ireland are simply second class in this respect.”
A teacher and parent herself, Mrs Brolly continued “Best practice in education policy requires consultation with parents and governors on any school policy or regulations. This includes appropriate time to consider and examine ‘new’ resources. This will be of significant importance in relation to RSE in our schools considering resources used in England not only outline how to have a secret abortion without parents knowledge, but also labels anyone who might persuade females to think again about abortion as an ‘inconvenience.”
Mrs Brolly concludes “For many years, teachers and educators have pressed government to facilitate and enable an appropriately funded, high standard of education system, that accessible to all. The need for real investment in our education system has never been more urgent. Yet, in the current education crisis, the priority for many MPs is to force teachers to teach to their agenda, with no room for respect or diversity. This politicising of our school curriculum flies in the face of all that is right in our current education system and must be stopped.”
