Aontú Laois Condemns Halloween Night Attack on Gardaí in Mountmellick

A video circulating on social media showing Gardaí being assaulted at a housing estate in
Mountmellick, Co. Laois where Gardaí tried to break up Halloween night celebrations is to be
condemned in the strongest possible terms.

Úna Doogue from Aontú Laois said to see members of An Garda Siochána having fireworks thrown at
them as they tried to control the situation is not just an attack on the Gardaí, but an attack against
our democracy.

She said “It had been brought to my attention by local community leaders in Mountmellick that anti-
social behaviour had already been on the rise over the last couple of years. Members of An Garda
Siochána have an incredibly difficult job trying to police anti-social behaviour. This combined with
trying to ensure public health safety measures are followed in line with public health guidelines
during the COVID pandemic which they have been tasked to oversee by the government to reduce
the spread of infection”.

“We need to ensure we don’t see a repeat of such shocking incidents and I will be engaging with
community leaders from the town to determine how we can prevent similar incidents going
forward”, Ms. Doogue concluded.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
