A Leopard Never Changes Its Spots, The North As A Tory Political Football

Aontú Leader & Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has stated that the proposed tactic by the Tory government to undermine their own withdrawal agreement and jeopardise the North, affirms the fact that the North is no more than a political football used by Brexiteer extremists.

Tóibín: “The dangerous and reckless tactics of the Tory government are simply history repeating itself. The most surprising thing is that people are surprised. Ireland must not be collateral damage in the Tory government’s pursuit of a hard Brexit. Its clear that as long as the Tories have a say in what happens in Ireland we are exposed and our national interest is threatened. I am calling on an Taoiseach Micheál Martin to shake off his reluctance to even contemplate an open and honest debate on Irish Unity. The decisions on Ireland’s future should be in the hands of the Irish people – and out of the hands of Boris Johnson.”

“Five years on, and Ireland is continuing to be damaged by Britain’s Brexit shambles. The people of the North are shackled to the misfortunes of the Tory government by virtue of nigh on a hundred years of partition. The self determination of the people of the north has been binned over and over again by the Tories. If the British people were given the chance to determine their status in Europe, surely the Irish people should be given the chance to vote on whether to have full self-determination.”

“The hard border of Brexit is yet another devastating consequence of partition. In so long as partition remains and the well-being of the Irish people is not wholly determined by the decisions of the Irish people, Britain’s will dictate elements of our safety and well-being. History has shown them to be poor in this regard, to say the very least. It is long past the time for Ireland to be entirely independent of Britain.”

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
