1000 per cent increase in Cavan Hospital trolley numbers is an indictment of Fine Gael-Fianna Fáil managment of our health service - OReilly
The number of people on trolleys in Cavan Hospital has risen by over 1,000 per cent over the last year.
The INMO said that updated figures from emergency departments and wards show 149 patients were on trolleys in Cavan Hospital in August, a large increase from the same period last year.
Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan saw a 100 per cent increase, with the number in Sligo University up by 58 per cent.
Commenting on the increase in patients on trolleys in Cavan, Aontú Cllr. Sarah O’Reilly stated:
“A bed capacity review in Cavan hospital is urgently required to determine the number of beds required especially now approaching winter.
"It is time to act now as the mounting pressure on emergency departments is predictable due to expected increases in admissions with winter related viruses and winter flue cases.
“Key staff shortages, appalling unsafe working conditions, rising trolley numbers and poor pay have contributed to nurses finding alternative professions or even countries to work in. The Government have failed miserably in a bid to attract them back into our health service.
“9,562 patients in hospitals all around the country, were forced to wait on trolleys for a hospital bed last month, people are suffering dreadfully. I really fear for what will happen as we approach the winter period."
Cllr O’Reilly stated: “We need to see immediate movement on the reopening of all closed beds in our hospitals and we need action on addressing the recruitment and retention crisis affecting our nurses and doctors. If this is not done then patients will be left on trolleys and their safety will continue to be put at risk.”
