6,666 abortions claimed as individual victories according to Abortion Rights Campaigner

Aontú Leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has expressed horror over the celebration of senior members of the Abortion Rights Campaign over the 6,666 abortions that were carried out last year. He stated;

“Yesterday was a devastating day for so many people. It was reported that the state ended the lives of 6,666 individual human beings in the first year of the abortion legislation. On a conservative estimate this equates to a radical increase in the number of abortions by the order of 40%”.

“98.2% of these abortions were carried out on healthy mothers and healthy children according to the information released by the department. The vast majority of people, no matter which way they voted in the referendum will see the loss of human life as a tragedy”.

“Yet in an insight into the thinking of the ARC each individual loss of life is seen as a victory to be celebrated. Such callousness and cruelty is both frightening and heart-breaking. Amazingly its been met with silence on the part of the political class. It shows that enormous work that needs to be carried out to introduce some level of humanity and compassion into this discussion”.

“The Committee on the 8th heard that 85% of abortions were carried out because of socio economic reasons, because so many women feel that they do not have the economic wherewithal to raise their children. This equates to 5,666 of these abortions. What would be a victory in a compassionate Ireland would be if each of these mothers were lifted out of poverty and given the economic confidence and supports to be able to raise their children”.

The Irish political system is radically broken

In Ireland the vast majority of elected representatives put a finger in the air to check which way the political wind is blowing. They have one eye on their leaders – seeking brownie points – and another eye keeping their seat safe. If elected reps shut up and do as they’re told, they are promoted; if they stand up for what they believe in, they are demoted. No wonder we have the political class we have. No wonder one point one billion euro is being buried in a hole under the National Children’s Hospital and that Stormont is in stalemate.

Throughout Ireland, many people are now afraid to say what they feel, many are afraid to respectfully engage on a range of different topics. Many feel there is a new censorship and a new political correctness in Ireland, that opposition to the establishment is being deleted.

Respectful opposition is not the enemy. Respectful opposition is a critical element of a functional democracy. Aontú will have the backbone to stand up, without fear, for you.
